The Planning and Zoning Department is responsible for managing the physical growth of the unincorporated area of the County. The regulations used to manage the County are found in the Lawrence County Comprehensive Plan, the Lawrence County Zoning Ordinances, and the Lawrence County Subdivision Regulations. Other responsiblities include but are not limited to:
The County Commissioners adopt land use plans and ordinances after recommendations are received from the Planning and Zoning Board. The Planning and Zoning Board consists of one County Commissioner and six citizen members appointed by the Commission to five year terms. The Planning and Zoning Board meets once a month to consider land use matters such as rezonings, Conditional Use Permits, Plats and other matters. The Planning Department staff provides research and technical support to the Commission and Board to assist in the decision making process.
