| The purpose of the squad is to assist in
searches and rescues within Lawrence County, and the surrounding area when requested
through the Emergency Management Director. All members of the squad are volunteers, and

of our training and abilities. |
HISTORY |
| The Lawrence County Civil Defense search
& Rescue squad was formed late in the year 1965. The squad was the first of it's
kind in the state of South Dakota. The purpose of the formation of the unit was to
"assist the Lawrence County Sheriff with some of the countless calls that come to his
office. Among these calls were lost men women and children, lost hunters of all
ages, car accidents, and a need for law enforcement." Membership has varied
through the years from the original five members to as many as forty-two
volunteers. Funding for the squad is provided by Lawrence County Office of
Emergacy Management and through donations |
