The Planning & Zoning Department is
responsible for managing the physical growth of the unincorporated area of the County. The
regulations used to manage the County are found in the Lawrence County Comprehensive Plan,
the Lawrence County Zoning Ordinances and the Lawrence County Subdivision Regulations.
The Lawrence County Comprehensive Plan is the official document used to guide decisions on
land use matters. The comprehensive plan is designed to anticipate and deal constructively
with changes occurring within the County. The Lawrence County Zoning Ordinances and the
Subdivision Regulations are specific documents to be used in conjunction with the
Comprehensive Plan.
The County Commissioners adopt land use plans and ordinances after recommendations are
received from the Planning & Zoning Board. The Planning & Zoning Board consists of
one County Commissioner and six citizen members appointed by the Commission to five year
terms. The Planning & Zoning Board meets once a month to consider land use matters
such as rezonings, Conditional Use Permits, Plats and other matters. The Planning
Department staff provides research and technical support to the Commission and Board to
assist in the decision making process.
Duties of this department include, but are not limited to:
- Building Applications
- Flood Plain Administration
- Land Use Applications
- Zoning Enforcement
- Septic Systems
- Plats
- Zoning Compliance
- Signage
